What it is

What technical SEO covers

SEO has three parts. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can reach and read your pages. On-page SEO matches each page to a keyword and answers it. Off-page SEO builds trust through links and mentions.

Will an SEO plugin handle this?Plugins add titles, a sitemap and schema. They can't solve web hosting performance issues, redirect chains or a theme that hides content on phones. What technical SEO is
  1. 01

    Crawling and indexing

Search Console's page indexing report lists every page Google skipped and why. Blocked pages, duplicates without a canonical and soft 404s are the usual issues.

  2. 02

    Speed and user experience

Google's Core Web Vitals measure loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability. A good page loads its main content within 2.5 seconds, responds within 200 milliseconds and barely shifts as it loads.

  3. 03

    Mobile-first indexing

Google uses the mobile version of a page, crawled with its smartphone user agent, for indexing and ranking. Content hidden on phones may never count toward visibility, and it hurts the user experience too.

  4. 04

    HTTPS and page experience

Google's page experience guidance asks whether pages load securely over HTTPS. Core Web Vitals are the part of page experience its ranking systems use.

  5. 05

    What technical SEO doesn't cover

Technical SEO won't write content or earn links. It removes the barriers, so on-page SEO and link building can move rankings.

  6. 06

    Structured data with limits

Structured data helps Google understand a page. Google doesn't guarantee rich results, and it asks you not to mark up content readers can't see.

  7. 07

AI search uses the same foundation

Optimizing for AI search starts with the same crawlable pages. Google says AI Overviews need no special optimization. Google only asks that the page sits in its index and can show a snippet. ChatGPT search also needs its OAI-SearchBot crawler allowed in robots.txt.

What's included

Our technical SEO services, area by area

Six technical SEO areas we check and improve every month.

Indexing

We identify Search Console indexing issues and get the pages that matter into Google's index, where visibility starts.

Core Web Vitals

Performance optimization for a better user experience. Image optimization and lighter scripts help phones load fast.

Redirects and status codes

301s for moved pages, 410s for removed ones and no redirect chains slowing crawlers down.

Canonicals and duplicates

One clear version of each page, so ranking signals don't split across duplicate URLs.

Structured data

Business, service and FAQ markup that matches what the page shows, with no hidden content.

Crawler access

robots.txt rules and an XML sitemap that let search engines and AI crawlers reach every page you want found.

Architecture

Site architecture search engines can follow

Google uses links to find new pages and to judge how pages relate. Good site architecture makes that easy for technical SEO. Every service, city and answer page sits in a clear place, and nothing important hides.

Does site architecture affect rankings? It helps search engines find pages and understand how they relate. A page Google can't find can't rank at all.How internal links help SEO
  1. 01

    Internal linking on every page

Google says every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your site. Orphan pages are easy for Google to miss.

  2. 02

    Links Google can crawl

Google can generally crawl a link only when it is a standard HTML link with an href. Menus that open through script clicks can hide whole sections.

  3. 03

    Descriptive anchor text

Google calls good anchor text descriptive, reasonably concise and relevant. Anchor text like "click here" tells users and search engines nothing.

  4. 04

    Clean URL structure

Short, readable URLs grouped by service and city keep the architecture clear. Every changed URL needs a 301 redirect to carry its signals to the new page.

  5. 05

    XML sitemap rules

A sitemap lists the URLs you want crawled. Google treats it as a hint, and one sitemap file holds up to 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed.

Site moves

Planning a site migration the way Google advises

A new domain, platform or URL structure puts years of rankings at risk. Technical SEO planning protects them. Google publishes clear guidance for site moves. These are the parts that matter most.

Does crawl budget matter for a local site?Rarely. Google wrote its crawl budget guide for sites with 10,000 fast-changing pages or a million pages. A current sitemap usually covers the rest.301 vs 302 redirects
  1. 01

    Map every old URL

List every old URL and its new home before launch. Google recommends permanent server-side redirects from each old URL to its new one.

  2. 02

Keep redirects for a year or more

Google says to keep the redirects as long as possible, generally at least one year. Removing them early throws signals away.

  3. 03

Tell Search Console about a new domain

For a domain change, submit a Change of Address in Search Console for the old site. It doesn't apply to an HTTPS or www switch.

  4. 04

    Expect a short dip

Google says to expect temporary ranking swings during a move. A small or medium site can take a few weeks for most pages to move.

Common problems

Technical SEO problems that cost rankings

These technical SEO issues block crawling, slow pages down or split ranking signals. Each one has a clear test and a clear repair.

robots.txt used to hide pages

A robots.txt rule stops crawling, but Google says it won't keep a page out of Google. A noindex tag does that job.

Noindex tags left behind

A noindex tag copied over from a staging site can drop whole sections from search results after a launch.

Redirect chains

Each extra hop can increase load time for users and crawlers. We point every old URL straight to its final page instead.

Duplicate URLs

Parameters, trailing slashes and http and https versions split signals. Redirects and canonical tags settle on one version.

Mixed content on HTTPS

An HTTPS page that loads images, media or scripts over plain http can trigger browser warnings. Every asset should load securely.

Content that needs JavaScript

Google crawls, renders and then indexes script-heavy pages. It calls server-side or pre-rendering a great idea for users and crawlers.

Our view

Google can't rank what it can't read. Technical SEO solves that first.

Content, backlinks and local SEO strategies all depend on pages search engines can crawl, render and index.

Compare

Technical SEO vs on-page SEO

Both shape rankings, but they work on different layers. Most sites need both, in that order. Optimizing one layer while another blocks Google wastes effort.

Where does user experience fit?Across all three. Fast, stable pages help every user and search engines alike, and Google says its ranking systems look at page experience signals.Types of SEO
  1. 01

Technical SEO focuses on the site

Web servers, code, URLs, performance and structured data. The goal is a site search engines can crawl, render and index without technical issues.

  2. 02

On-page SEO works on each page

Keyword research, titles, headings and copy. The goal is a page that answers one search better than the pages above it.

  3. 03

Off-page SEO works beyond the site

Links, reviews and mentions on other sites. They build the trust that helps strong pages climb.

  4. 04

    Why technical SEO comes first

Great content on a page Google can't index earns no visibility. Technical optimization gives later SEO strategies room for growth.

Hiring

When to bring in a technical SEO agency

Many technical SEO problems stay invisible until traffic drops, and few owners spot them early. A technical SEO agency focuses on the code, server and site structure that content strategies rarely touch.

In-house developer or SEO agency?Your development team ships the code. A technical SEO agency finds which changes matter to search engines and checks the results in Search Console.SEO audit
  1. 01

Before a site move or redesign

A new domain, platform or URL structure is the riskiest moment for organic traffic. A redirect map and a crawl before launch protect the rankings and visibility you earned.

  2. 02

    After an unexplained traffic drop

Search Console data, server logs and crawl tools show whether the cause is technical. Analysis and research come first, to identify the real problem.

  3. 03

    When pages won't index

If excluded pages increase month after month, something in the setup blocks Google. The URL Inspection tool shows what Google knows about each page.

  4. 04

When growth stalls on page two

Good content can still sit on page two for its main keyword when speed, duplicates or weak internal linking hold it back. Technical SEO can increase the return on every page. Better speed and cleaner code deliver results content alone can't.
