Not all engagement is equal
- Likes and reactionsA quick tap of approval
- CommentsA reply that starts a conversation
- Saves and sharesContent worth keeping or passing on
- Messages and clicksPeople asking or acting
Why platforms care
Instagram says Explore ranking leans on likes, saves and shares. For Reels, it predicts whether people will watch to the end, like and reshare. Strong engagement tells the platform to show a post to more people.
How to earn more of it
- Ask a simple question people can answer quickly.
- Post tips worth saving for later.
- Reply to every comment to keep threads going.
- Use Story polls and question stickers.
- Show real people, which draws more reactions.
What does not count
Engagement pods, bought likes and giveaway spam inflate numbers without real interest. They can also confuse platforms about who your audience is. Buying fake engagement for business use can violate the FTC's 2024 rule as well.
Good example. A plant shop posts a care tip and asks which plant followers struggle with. Comments turn into product questions and in-store visits.
Bad example. A plant shop joins an engagement pod. Likes double from strangers abroad, and no local customer notices.
