The three building blocks
| Part | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tag | Code that sends data somewhere | A Google Ads conversion tag |
| Trigger | The rule for when the tag fires | A form submission |
| Variable | A value the tag or trigger uses | The order total |
When to use it
- Several ad platforms and tools
- Tracking changes every month
- Marketers make the changes
- Complex forms or events
- One or two simple tags
- Tracking rarely changes
- A developer already maintains it
- Speed matters most
Benefits and risks
Tag Manager has a preview mode to test tags before publishing and keeps a version history you can roll back. The risk is clutter. Containers collect old tags over the years, and each one adds weight to the page. Too many people with publish access can break tracking without noticing.
Keep the container clean
- Give publish access to one or two people.
- Name tags clearly, by platform and action.
- Remove tags for tools you stopped using.
- Test in preview mode before every publish.
Good example. An ecommerce store uses Tag Manager for Google Ads, Analytics and Meta. Each tag has a clear name and only two people can publish.
Bad example. A store's container has 60 tags from four past agencies. Nobody knows which still matter, and the site slows down.
Read what the Google tag is. Our PPC management audits containers before adding new tags.
