What is SEO, and what does it stand for?

Short answer

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It means improving your website and Google listings so Google shows your pages to people searching for what you sell. Unlike ads, you do not pay per click. For a local business, SEO covers web results, the map pack and AI answers.

What SEO means in plain words

Search engine optimization is the work that helps search engines find, understand and trust your pages. Google picks results with its own algorithms. Nobody can pay Google for a better organic position, and Google says so in its documentation.

The goal is not traffic for its own sake. A dental office wants patients who search for an emergency dentist nearby. A pest control company wants homeowners with a problem today. SEO connects those searches to a page that answers them and makes contact easy.

Where SEO shows up on Google

PlaceWhat the searcher seesWhat earns you a spot
Web resultsThe list of pages under the adsA page that matches the search and works well on a phone
Map packLocal businesses next to a mapA complete Business Profile, reviews and distance to the searcher
AI OverviewsA written summary with links to sourcesClear, helpful pages that Google can cite

Google says the same SEO practices apply to its AI features. There is no separate trick for AI answers.

What SEO work includes

SEO has three parts. Technical SEO lets Google crawl and index the site. On-page SEO makes each page match one search. Off-page SEO builds trust through reviews, mentions and links. Our answer on the types of SEO covers each part.

Good example. An Orlando lawn care company has separate pages for mowing, sod and landscaping. Each page shows local photos, answers common questions and keeps a call button near the top.

Bad example. One Services page lists lawn care, tree trimming, irrigation and pressure washing with no detail, no proof and no clear way to call.

How to tell if SEO is working

Rankings alone do not pay the bills. Check these three numbers each month.

  • Impressions and clicks in Google Search Console
  • Calls, forms and bookings tracked in GA4
  • Leads that turned into paying customers

Our SEO services report on all three. Plans start with a $2,000 monthly base plus $700 for each Google Business Profile, and you own every account we set up.
