Do you need coding skills to build or manage a website?

Short answer

No, not to run a well-built website. A CMS lets you edit text, photos, prices and pages without code. You need a developer to build the site, create new page types and connect systems like a CRM. Speed fixes and security need one too. Plan for both roles.

What needs code and what does not

Who does what
No code needed
  • Edit text, photos and prices
  • Add posts, reviews and team members
  • Add pages from existing templates
  • Update hours and contact details
Code or a developer
  • Build the site and its templates
  • Create new types of pages
  • Connect CRMs, booking and payments
  • Fix speed, security and tracking

The builder route

Website builders like Wix and Squarespace let non-coders build a whole site with drag and drop. They work for simple sites. The limits show when you need custom features, top speed or a site that moves easily to another host.

The SEO side

You do not need code for most SEO either. Google says a small local business can probably do much of its SEO itself, and its SEO Starter Guide speaks to site owners. Titles, descriptions, headings and content all live in the CMS. Technical items like redirects, structured data and speed fixes usually need a developer's help.

Knowing a little HTML still helps

You never have to learn code. Knowing a few basics still saves time, like how a link works, what a heading tag is and why image sizes matter. You will spot problems faster and talk to developers more easily.

Good example. A landscaping owner updates seasonal prices, adds project photos and writes a monthly post in the CMS. A developer steps in twice a year for new features.

Bad example. The same owner tries to add a booking system by pasting code from a forum, and the contact form stops working for a month.
