From search to click
- SearchSomeone types a query or opens an app.
- AuctionEligible ads compete based on bid and quality.
- RankingEach ad gets an Ad Rank that sets its position.
- ClickThe visitor clicks, and the winner pays.
What decides who wins
Google says Ad Rank depends on several things. The bid matters, and so does the quality of the ad and landing page. Thresholds, the searcher's context and ad assets count too. A relevant ad with a strong page can beat a higher bid.
That is good news for small businesses. You do not have to outspend everyone. You have to be more relevant to the search.
What you pay
With cost-per-click bidding, you set a maximum. You usually pay less, because the actual cost is what you need to beat the next ad below you. Google does not charge for clicks it judges invalid, like repeated accidental or automated clicks.
What you control
- Keywords or audiences. Who can see your ads.
- Locations and hours. Where and when ads run.
- Budget and bids. How much you spend.
- Ads and landing pages. What people see and where they go.
- Conversion tracking. What counts as a result.
Good example. A dentist targets "emergency dentist near me" with an ad that names same-day visits and a landing page with a booking button. Strong relevance keeps costs reasonable.
Bad example. The same dentist sends every ad to the homepage, and quality scores drop along with the leads.
