When PPC is the better choice
| Situation | Why PPC fits |
|---|---|
| A new business or website | Ads run before organic rankings exist |
| A new service or city | You test demand before building pages |
| Seasonal demand | Spend rises and falls with the season |
| Very competitive terms | Ranking organically could take years |
| Short promotions | Ads start and stop on exact dates |
When SEO is the better choice
- Your market has steady demand all year.
- Clicks in your trade are very expensive.
- You can wait several months for results.
- You want leads that do not stop when spending stops.
Google's own guidance on SEO says results can take months to show. That delay is the main reason to start ads first when cash flow needs leads now.
Using both on purpose
The strongest setup uses each channel where it wins. Run PPC on high-intent terms where organic rankings are weak. Let SEO carry the terms where you already rank well. Review cost per lead from each channel monthly and shift budget toward the cheaper source.
Good example. A new HVAC company runs search ads for AC repair from day one and builds service pages at the same time. After a year, organic calls cover half its leads.
Bad example. A new company waits a year for SEO to work and runs out of cash before the phone rings.
For seasonal businesses, Google Ads offers seasonality adjustments that tell smart bidding about short, expected spikes in conversions.
