What a wireframe shows
- Which sections appear on a page
- The order of those sections
- Where buttons, forms and the phone number sit
- How the layout changes on a phone
- Rough headlines that show each section's job
It leaves out colors, fonts, photos and polished copy on purpose. Without them, everyone discusses what the page needs, not whether they like the shade of blue.
Why wireframes save money
- WireframeMove a box or delete a section in minutes.
- Visual designRework layouts, images and spacing in hours.
- Built siteRewrite code and content in days.
Catching a missing section at the wireframe stage costs almost nothing. Catching it after launch means redesign and rebuild.
Wireframes for a local service site
Good example. A wireframe for an HVAC service page puts the headline and call button first. Problems, process, reviews, pricing factors, FAQs and a form follow. The owner moves reviews higher before anyone designs a pixel.
Bad example. The team skips wireframes and designs the page in full color. The owner then asks for a pricing section, and half the design gets redone.
Wireframes, wireflows and sitemaps
A sitemap shows all the pages. A wireframe shows one page. Nielsen Norman Group describes wireflows, which combine wireframes with arrows to show how a task moves across screens, like a booking flow. Small sites need sitemaps and wireframes. Wireflows help when a task spans several steps.
