Common causes
| Cause | What happens |
|---|---|
| Competitors | Rivals raise bids or pause ads |
| Demand | Weather, holidays and seasons change searches |
| Budget pacing | Daily spend can reach double the budget on busy days |
| Conversion lag | Leads arrive days after the click |
| Learning | Bid strategies recalibrate after changes |
| Small numbers | Five leads vs eight looks like a big swing |
Conversion lag fools many owners
Google Ads credits each conversion to the day of the click. A lead who clicks Monday and calls Friday shows up under Monday, but only after Friday. Recent days always look weaker than they will once late conversions arrive.
When a swing is a real problem
- Conversions fall to zero after a site update.
- Spend jumps with no change in budget.
- Spam leads suddenly flood the form.
- Impression share drops sharply against a rival.
These need a look the same day. Normal swings do not.
Read trends, not weeks
Compare four-week periods, or this month against the same month last year. Seasonal businesses should expect big shifts, like HVAC in summer or tax services in spring.
Good example. A tax preparer compares April with last April and sees steady growth. It ignores a slow week in March.
Bad example. A tax preparer cuts the budget after one slow week. The busy season starts and the ads cannot keep up.
