Radius vs ZIP codes
- A circle around one address
- Quick to set up
- Ignores rivers and highways
- Good for a starting point
- Follows real neighborhoods
- Takes longer to set up
- Can skip areas you avoid
- Better once you have data
How to pick the distance
Start with how far your team travels without losing money. Add the drive time customers accept for a visit to you. Then look at where your best jobs came from last year and draw the circle around them.
Layered radiuses
You can set several circles around the same address. With manual bidding, a tight inner circle can get a higher bid and an outer ring a lower one. Smart Bidding ignores those adjustments and sets bids itself.
Check and adjust
- Use presence only, so the circle means people inside it.
- Review the locations report after two to four weeks.
- Exclude ZIP codes with clicks but no booked jobs.
- Add separate circles if you have more than one office.
Good example. An HVAC company on manual bidding uses a 12-mile inner radius with higher bids and a 25-mile outer ring with lower bids.
Bad example. An HVAC company sets a 50-mile circle that crosses a bay it never drives around.
